
The Nigerian Academy of Engineering announces with deep sorrow the passing of Sir Professor Alfred Babatunde Olaiya Soboyejo, FNSE, FAEng, a distinguished scholar and mentor, who passed away on Friday, 31st October 2025, at the age of 87.
Professor Soboyejo served with distinction at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Lagos and The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, as well as other international universities and research centers.
He was an accomplished engineer and educator with expertise spanning civil, structural, agricultural, mechanical, and aerospace engineering. Renowned for his application of statistics and probability to engineering problems, he made significant contributions to biological engineering, orthopaedic medicine, and aerospace materials research, notably in the areas of bone strength studies, fatigue, and fracture mechanics.
Professor Soboyejo was admitted as Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering in 2020 and celebrated for his dedication to teaching, research, and mentorship. His work advanced practical solutions to engineering challenges and inspired generations of students and professionals.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider academic community.
